A Fresh Start

Recently,  I closed a chapter of my life in order to start anew.  After getting so caught up in the daily grind, I now choose to focus on creativity and the journey .  So, I have gathered art supplies and am going to do something that scares me.  I’m going to start painting again.  I’m going to travel. I’m going to share places, ideas, art, nature…life with my son.

Our world has been small. I intend to open it up and allow adventure and excitement into our lives.  Now, that can be scary for someone with special needs. My son likes routine. That’s fine, but I need to teach him that it can be fun to discover new things. It can be fun to be flexible. It can be amazing to go to new places and go on adventures at a moment’s notice.

The adventure doesn’t have to take us to far away places (although that would be exciting).  We can try new things in our own home. We can eat/cook new food (definitely a struggle for my kiddo); We can go to a new place in our own town, state, or country.  There are so many possibilities.  Come along with us. We’ll share reviews, opinions, photographs, and more.

Buckle up, it’s going to be an interesting ride!

(About us: I’m a single mom with a young teen who is on the Autism spectrum. He also has an Immune Deficiency which leads to many illnesses. We both have multiple food allergies. My son may have special needs, but he is a kind, fabulous kid who is creative and has an epic sense of humor!)

Suzy Duffy and Me

Suzy Duffy is a local (to me) author.  She’s from Ireland but she and her family decided to move to the Boston area.

After I read Suzy’s first book in the New England Trilogy, Wellesley Wives, I was hooked.  Her second book Newton Neighbors was quite funny.  Her third book in the trilogy is Lincoln Ladies, which was recently released.

Lincoln Ladies is my favorite of Suzy’s books! I could relate more to Kate, the main character, better than any other woman in Suzy’s books so far.
Kate is feeling the effects of empty nest syndrome and, at the urging of her best friend, decides to go on a vacation. A vacation that is super cozy, yet life changing.
Suzy’s writing pulls you in and you’ll swear you are also relaxing in Italy. A fabulous read!

Pick up a copy today and get ready to escape!

I’m Back!

Ok, now that life has calmed down a little (knock on wood), I’m going to start blogging again.  I’ll have reviews on places and product.  I’ll talk about life.  My son will chat about his life and/or ideas.  And, just as important, I hope to hear from you.  Comments, Recommendations, and Feedback is always welcome!  Unless you’re a troll.  No trolls allowed.  🙂

Autumn

Let’s begin by me saying that I love October.  It’s my favorite month.  I love the cooler (not cold) weather.  The pops of color.  Ooh, and don’t forget that glorious scent of leaves.  I feel both alive, yet so comfy.

It’s only October 2nd and I’m wiped out.  Just like that, it feels like someone pulled the rug out from under me.   I took my son to a new Neurologist at Children’s Hospital Boston.  She seems quite thorough, which is good.  We have to go back on Friday for my son to get hooked up for an ambulatory EEG.  This should be interesting.  I can only imagine the stares we will get if I bring him out and about with his headed wrapped up and wires sticking out like he’s a personal friend of Dr. Frankenstein.

It’s always something.

Weekend Plans

Future Author

We went to an author event at a local, independent book store tonight. My son seriously loves meeting authors and hearing about the writing process. He gets so excited about reading new books when he goes to these events. I love that! So, we picked up a few books (and had them signed by local author Julie Berry.) We are going to have a cozy weekend surrounded by blankets and books.

Usually, we don’t do anything at night. This weekend is certainly not typical for us. I have a school parent meeting/social Saturday night. Then I have a mom’s group social at Blue Ginger on Sunday night. This will be my third year going to this event. As of right now, I don’t have anyone to watch my son on Sunday evening. So, I probably won’t be able to go. Sad. I love Blue Ginger. Although, with my growing food allergy list, I doubt I’d be able to eat much at the event! (Being allergic to garlic is completely absurd.)

Anyway, I would love to hear what all of you have planned for this weekend. Leave a comment!

Video EEG (in patient)

My son recently was in the hospital for a video EEG (checking for seizure activity.) The process of getting all the wires attached was stinky and tedious.
We’ll be seeing a new Neurologist at a different hospital (someone with more experience). They may end up doing another EEG stay. Oh boy. What fun.

Mayhem

I like the word but I don’t like it being a part of my life. You know what I mean?  Due to new, ongoing medical developments with my son, I haven’t had a chance to blog.  Heck, I really haven’t had much time to think. Or breathe.  Breathing is important.  Breathing too fast leads to hyperventilating.  How do I know?  Bah, don’t ask.  😉

In the middle of all this chaos, I’ve started a new business.  You know, because I don’t have enough going on in my life. Heh heh.  Actually, having the business gives me something productive to do.  I feel a sense of accomplishment when I work at my home business.  I feel…useful.  Especially when I get positive feedback.

I will be adding a widget this weekend to showcase said new business.  Look for it. Click it. Ooh and Ah. Have fun.

I wish I could post it right now but I’m sitting at a cafe solely for the wifi.  We are having our kitchen floor ripped up, repaired, replaced so we had a to vacate for a few days.  My son and I are staying at my mom’s tiny elderly housing apartment.  No internet. No cable (which really means no tv at all.)  My son is bouncing off the wall and I’m not acclimating well, either.  So absurd how technology has changed our lives.

Once we are back at home, I hope to be able to get some work (and blogging) done. Until then, hope you all have a good week/weekend!

Life is a Journey

It's going to be a bumpy ride.

It’s going to be a bumpy ride.

It’s time to try something new.  I’ve blogged on and off for years but it wasn’t exactly cohesive.  It seemed disjointed and inconsistent.  Lately, I’ve been having so many ideas.  I felt I needed to start writing things down.  My son also has been wanting to blog. So, this blog will be all about our: Ideas; Creativity; Life; Special Needs; Adventure; and Feelings.  Yep, the F word.  We’ll jump into the deep end and tread through feelings good, bad, and…meh.  We’ll talk about places to go, people to see, and things to do.  Of course, there will be a heaping spoonful of comedy throughout.

Come join us on our journey.  See life through the eyes of child on the autism spectrum; see life through the eyes of said child.  Find out where we go and what we think about it.  Disclaimer: We will be giving honest, personal opinions on places we go and things we try.

Of course, we welcome comments.  We adore comments. So come chat with us. We’d love to hear from you!  Ready, Set, Go!
